What's My Next Career Step? You’re Standing on It.

In the flurry of trying to move your career forward you look for answers outside; new skills, new roles, new courses, new anything. Can you see the unspoken assumption here that your path is outside of your current reach, view, or reality? This is false.

Is it not true that every path you have walked, existed before you thought of it? It was already under your feet. Rather than heading out to find it, you just need to look down through clearer eyes.

🔹The business idea that’s been under your nose for years buried within your passions. But, you assumed it ‘couldn’t be done’.

🔹The career or lifestyle change that makes all the sense in the world to you now. Yet, at one point you never considered it, but it was always there.

🔹The ‘minor’ skill you’ve always had becomes a bridge to your next role. But, remember how felt it ‘too ordinary’?

🔹The direct or indirect feedback you’ve dismissed for years becomes a golden key to unlocking a whole new life. But, it felt impossible to accept at the time.

The clues are already in your landscape, already within direct line-of-sight. Seeing clearer is a skill which I’ll elaborate on further in this article, for the moment however my point is… it’s all already here. The information, the path, the possibility, the obstacles, and also the way.

I read somewhere ‘Real eyes realise real lies’ and it’s always had an impact on me, helping me create space to question the stories I have built around myself. Many of us have created webs of stories around us, within a culture and organisation that have done the same. We were born into it, the gift of this is learning to see clearly. In time we can clear more and more of this web around us, our vision and freedom thus expand.

🎯 Takeaway: What you’re looking for isn’t ahead of you. It’s already here, waiting to be seen. The stronger your urge to be somewhere other than here, the greater the gift that awaits you.

Patterns That Point the Way

🔹 Overexplaining yourself in meetings to make sure the point lands. Then, noticing the self-talk that follows and how it shapes the way others engage with you in the future.

🔹 Jumping to solve a problem or have the right answer before anyone else does. Then, the invisible dynamics and impact this sets in motion around you.

🔹 Shrinking back in certain conversations as if you have less to offer than you do. Then, observing the self-talk afterwards and the self-doubt it fuels.

🔹 Moments or situations at work where you somehow feel like you’re a child again. Then, feeling the shame or confusion that follows.

These are not things that are wrong with you and nothing is broken. They are protective patterns in motion, also acting as guideposts that say ‘look here’ or ‘dig here’.

When pressure hits, our automatic reactions come forward. They reveal our strengths in action and also the false-stories and wounds we have learned to work around. Most of us skim past these moments because they feel uncomfortable or unflattering. Yet this discomfort is what makes them so valuable, pausing to examine them allows us to uncover the deeper forces at work such as unspoken fears, early life beliefs, and the rules we have been carrying without realising it.

🎯 Takeaway: Noticing your own patterns with clear, clean eyes allows you to move forward. They are guideposts saying ‘look here’ or ‘dig here’.

Our Web of Stories

We each live inside a web of stories. They shape what we see as possible, what we dismiss, and what we never even think to try. Many of these stories were formed early, reinforced over time, and eventually became invisible to us. Yet they quietly direct our choices every day.

🔹 A story about risk or self-worth makes new ideas feel impossible to start. This smothers your entrepreneurial spirit, even though a business idea that has been under your nose for years, you kept dismissing it.

🔹 A story about lack keeps the obvious paths out of sight. This delays you making a career change that seems obvious in hindsight, but you never seriously considered it until life forced you.

🔹 A story about undervaluing yourself hides your skills and talents from the world. This causes you to believe you are too ordinary to matter, and your gifts are never applied to their potential.

🔹 A story about not being capable or worthy of love means you keep what feels uncomfortable at arm’s length your whole life. As a result you never get to know yourself fully, explore your depths, and unlock your true potential.

These stories are powerful because they operate unseen. They filter our options before we even realise a choice exists. The first step is learning to notice them. The next is allowing their messages in.

Allowing the message in means being willing to face what feels inconvenient, unready, or uncomfortable. It is the practice of questioning the automatic “no” we give to certain possibilities and recognising that what we seek is often already here, disguised by the stories we have learned to believe.

🎯 Takeaway: The challenge you resist may be the step you need most.

Finding the Messages in Discomfort

Fear and discomfort are often the first signals that a clue is close. Tracking these feelings carefully gives us a way in. If the discomfort is everywhere, it can feel overwhelming and endless, which often means it needs to be cleared from the root. That was my personal experience about a decade ago. For most people, discomfort appears in specific moments. In those moments, we can work with precision, tracing them back and peeling away the layers to see what is really there.

You can start this yourself by being curious, keeping a journal, or using an emotion diary. In my work with clients, we trace unwanted results back to the behaviours that create them, then follow those behaviours into the emotions that drive them. From there, we go deeper into the underlying story, wound, or belief that is influencing everything above the surface.

As an example, an entrepreneur came to me concerned about feeling constantly burnt out and wanting better ways to optimise his time and workload. He framed it as an efficiency and workload issue.

As we explored, a pattern emerged. Whenever a new opportunity appeared, he would jump on it immediately, even if it pulled focus from his core business. At first, he tried to defend this behaviour, but eventually we located a long held belief that slowing down or passing on an opportunity meant he was falling behind.

Who was he in the absence of movement, business, and excitement? He did not know, and the void scared him. He was running from the emptiness of not knowing himself. Once we connected with his inner child who was afraid, and other parts of him in fear, the pressure to chase and change everything began to ease. He learned to pause, evaluate opportunities against his long term vision, and commit only to those that truly aligned. Over time, his energy increased, his business focus sharpened, and the feeling of lack and fear dissolved.

This process turns fear from an unwelcomed block into a source of intelligence. When we can listen without collapsing into the emotion, we start to access choices that were previously invisible.

🎯 Takeaway: Fear points to the exact place your next level of freedom is waiting.

How to Stop Reliving the Same ‘Problems’

Growth happens in cycles. Like seasons. We hit a challenge, eventually work through it, feel progress, then find ourselves facing another months, years, or decades later. Many people assume this is simply how life works, that deep patterns take a lifetime to change.

The problem is that these loops can be exhausting. You start to wonder if you will ever get past the same frustrations, fears, or situations. Relationships replay old conflicts. Career patterns keep circling back. Even when you make progress, the return of the same theme can feel like failure. Over time, this wears down confidence, builds self-doubt, and can leave you feeling stuck in a life that keeps repeating itself.

The truth is they take this long only because we fight, avoid, and resist. We delay leaning in. We focus on symptoms instead of roots. This turns a lesson that could take days into one that drags on for decades. When we truly engage and learn to navigate, these loops can be shortened dramatically. Change can happen in weeks, hours, or even minutes. When I am working with a client and we reach the precise root, the shift is instant.

You can begin to recognise the signs earlier. You can respond with awareness instead of reactivity. You can get to the heart of the pattern faster and shift it more deeply.

This is the work of alignment, bringing your inner world into congruence with what you want to create. As alignment grows, roadblocks turn into brief reminders to course-correct rather than long detours. Progress becomes natural rather than forced. You stop being at the mercy of the cycle and start moving with it.

🎯 Takeaway: Awareness and alignment collapse time. What once took years to learn can become a single, life-changing moment.
